Postcard 1937 Chrome Venice Venezia Ca d'Oro Grand Canal Gondola Cecami Italy

Venice, Italy1937ChromeExcellent

A gondolier poles his sleek craft across the shimmering blue-green expanse of Venice's Grand Canal, the lacy Gothic tracery of the Ca' d'Oro — the "House of Gold" — rising in its full four-story splendor behind him, its pointed arches and white Istrian stone facade as delicate as carved ivory against the warm ochre of neighboring palaces. Built between 1428 and 1430 for the Contarini family and once gilded with actual gold leaf, the Ca' d'Oro is among the finest surviving examples of Venetian Gothic architecture in the world, and Cecami's 1937 printing captures its asymmetric beauty with the soft, luminous color palette that made this Milan-based publisher's cards among the most coveted of the mid-twentieth century. A vaporetto stop and small wooden kiosk visible at the right edge ground the scene in the everyday life of 1930s Venice, before the mass tourism that would later transform the canal's banks.
