Postcard 1930s RPPC Fiesole Convento S. Francesco Chiostro Friar Italy STA

Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy1935RPPCGood

A lone friar in dark habit and white rope cincture stands motionless on the flagstone path of the cloister garden at the Convento di San Francesco in Fiesole, his figure dwarfed by the ancient colonnaded loggia and the rough-hewn stone walls of a Franciscan convent that has clung to this Tuscan hillside since the early fifteenth century — looking out, unseen by us, across a garden of climbing vines and carefully tended beds toward the distant shimmer of Florence below. The real-photographic printing (RPPC-style halftone) gives the image an almost cinematic depth, the friar's stillness within the busy textures of stone and foliage creating a quietly contemplative composition that transcends mere tourist documentation. Fiesole's convent, founded by Franciscan friars around 1399 on the site of an earlier Etruscan settlement, attracted pilgrims and intellectuals alike; the cloister itself is one of the most intimate and best-preserved in Tuscany. The close-up detail scan reveals the friar's face with surprising clarity — a young man, perhaps, caught between prayer and the passing of a photographer's shutter. Published by STA (no. 70271), an Italian publisher active in the mid-twentieth century.
