Antique & Vintage Postcards

Cast in 1186 by master craftsman Bonanno Pisano, the great bronze doors of Monreale Cathedral rank among the supreme achievements of Norman-Sicilian art — and this sepia real-photo postcard captures their richly narrative panels with striking clarity. Eight relief panels are visible across the two door leaves, each framed by an elaborate vine-and-rosette border; Latin inscriptions identify scenes including the Entry into Jerusalem (Exeunt Rabigeni Ale), a Dispersion of Mary (Despur Gasiones Mari C), and the Baptistery (Batisterio), alongside a mandorla-framed Christ in Majesty. The warm sepia tones render every chisel stroke legible, making this an unusually documentary image of a monument that survived World War II intact. Published by Francesco Verderosa of Palermo under catalogue number 21400, the card was never mailed and retains a clean, unwritten reverse — a collector's blank slate bearing only a penciled price notation of 25¢.
