Antique & Vintage Postcards

A horse-drawn carriage waits in the sun-drenched piazza before the magnificent striped façade of the Basilica di Santa Chiara in Assisi — the 13th-century Gothic church of Saint Clare photographed in rich sepia tones that lend the scene an almost timeless devotional gravity, the rose window gleaming above the arched buttress as a lone figure in period dress strolls past. Published by the Assisi-based house of Vignati Luigi, this real-photograph-style card (catalogue no. 9593) captures the basilica before mass tourism transformed the piazza, with authentic street life — a carriage horse, a boy near a bollard, a gentleman in a hat — animating the foreground. The reverse is unposted but bears a penciled notation in the upper left corner, possibly a stock or price marking. The Basilica di Santa Chiara, built 1257–1265 and consecrated in 1265, remains one of Umbria's great pilgrimage destinations; early photographic cards of it are steadily collected by both Italian topographic and religious subject enthusiasts.
