Antique & Vintage Postcards

An opulent Baroque state coach gleams under the museum lights of Naples' Certosa di San Martino — this early undivided-back card captures the famous "Carrozza di gala degli Eletti," the ceremonial gala carriage of the Neapolitan Eletti (city councillors), its gilded acanthus scrollwork and sculpted putti frozen in photographic halftone with remarkable detail for its era. The carriage, dating to the eighteenth century, was among the crown jewels of the Museo Nazionale di San Martino's transport collection, and seeing it reproduced on a tourist postcard circa 1900–1905 speaks to Naples' ambitions as a cultural destination at the height of Belle Époque travel. The card's undivided back — with its multilingual UPU legend in French, Italian, English, German, and Spanish — and the lithographic credit to "Lit. De Luca Gentile & C., Napoli" precisely date it to the pre-1907 undivided-back era. The upper edge shows honest wear with a torn corner, evidence of a card that traveled in a pocket or album for over a century.
