Antique & Vintage Postcards

The skeletal columns of Pompeii's Temple of Jupiter (Tempio di Giove) rise above the Forum pavement in this beautifully composed photographic postcard, Vesuvius presiding silently over the scene in the background — the same volcano that buried this very temple under meters of ash and pumice in 79 AD. The temple's remaining Corinthian columns, its broad staircase, and the triumphal arch to the right are rendered with excellent tonal gradation, suggesting a skilled photographer working in the early interwar period. Published by the Hôtel Suisse in Pompeii (card no. 15109, "Produzione Italiana / Made in Italy"), this card is a fascinating artifact of the town's thriving archaeological tourism industry — the hotel sold postcards of the ruins to its guests as souvenirs of their excavation visits. A pencilled price notation "15¢" appears on the back, suggesting it was sold or priced for a small collection. Unused with deckle-adjacent trimmed edges and excellent image quality.
