Pompei Panorama del Foro Forum Vesuvius Postcard c1900 Italy Chromolithograph

Pompeii, Italy1902Pre-linenExcellent

Standing in the vast sunlit expanse of Pompeii's ancient Forum, a lone tiny figure in Victorian dress provides haunting human scale against the ruined colonnades and altars — while Vesuvius itself looms pale and massive on the horizon, the very volcano that buried this scene under meters of ash in 79 AD. This richly hand-tinted chromolithograph, published by the esteemed Edizioni E. Ragozino of the Galleria Umberto, Naples, captures the Forum looking north toward the Temple of Jupiter, with broken columns, sacrificial altars, and the base of an honorific statue visible in the foreground. The undivided back format — address-only side with the instruction "Sul lato anteriore della presente si scrive soltanto l'indirizzo" — dates this card firmly to the pre-1907 era, when international postal regulations had not yet permitted message writing on the address side. A fine example of pre-linen Grand Tour ephemera in excellent chromographic condition.
