Antique & Vintage Postcards

A tranquil English countryside scene — a stone village church with a square Norman tower reflected in the still waters of a winding stream, reed beds and willows framing the composition — sets the mood for this early Edwardian-era color art postcard, printed in Bavaria and posted July 1 (circa 1907) to Miss Florence in South Otselic, New York. The sender, writing in a cramped but spirited hand, reports arriving home safely "all night" after a journey that apparently involved riding and some adventure, urging Florence not to worry about them and signing off warmly. The card's undivided-back format and Bavarian printing hallmark place it squarely in the golden age of picture postcards, and the pastoral Anglican church image was a perennial favorite for the American market.
