1923 French Aviation Congress Menu Vauville Manche Motorless Flight Rare

Vauville, Manche, Normandy, France1923Pre-linenFair-Good

An extraordinary piece of French aviation ephemera — a formal dinner menu printed for the Deuxième Congrès Expérimental d'Aviation sans Moteur (Second Experimental Congress of Motorless Aviation), held at Vauville, Manche, Normandy in August 1923, stamped in purple ink "12 AOÛT 1923." The letterhead decoration is breathtaking in its symbolism: an early biplane — almost certainly referencing the Comte de Lambert's legendary 1909 flight around the Eiffel Tower — soars above an orange-washed sky, the tower itself rising at lower left in delicate grey linework, the whole scene printed in the warm amber and grey palette of Art Deco commercial printing. The menu was issued by Maison Gaze de Rennes (Hôtel Moderne), concessionaire of the restaurant at the Hotellerie de Biville, and lists a refined dinner: Consommé Vermicelle, Gigot de Pré Salé, Salade, Petits Pois à la Française, Crème au Café, Dessert — accompanied by Champagne Louis Royer. The reverse carries the header "Carte des Vins" (wine list), left blank. This congress was part of the early European glider and soaring movement that directly preceded the modern sport of gliding; the Vauville cliffs on the Cotentin Peninsula were and remain a premier soaring site.
