Postcard 1930s Linen Old Fort Johnson Amsterdam NY Sir Wm Johnson 1742

Amsterdam, New York, USA1935LinenExcellent

Ivy cloaks the stone walls of Old Fort Johnson like a living relic, the same fortified manor house that Sir William built in 1742 as both a family home and a defensive outpost on the colonial frontier — a place where Mohawk leaders once gathered with British officers to negotiate the fate of a continent. This linen-era card, published by Chas. W. Hughes of Mechanicville, NY, captures the estate through a curtain of mature hardwoods, the stone gate pillars standing sentinel at the entrance drive, a sign board legible just to the left of the path. The warm hand-tinted palette of sage, amber, and rust gives the scene an almost painterly dreaminess typical of linen-era production. Old Fort Johnson, located in what is now the town of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York, survives today as a museum — one of the oldest surviving pre-Revolutionary domestic structures in the state. The back carries no message or stamp, suggesting this card was kept as a souvenir rather than mailed.
