Postcard 1910s Orange Spring Formation Yellowstone Park Haynes Photo

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA1913Pre-linenExcellent

A volcanic mound of terracotta and celadon rises from steaming mineral pools in this early hand-tinted photograph of Yellowstone's Orange Spring Formation — one of the Mammoth Hot Springs terraces — captured by J. E. Haynes, the park's legendary official photographer whose lens defined how a generation of Americans first pictured the world's first national park. The image number 19014 and the "Domestic 1c / Foreign 2c" stamp rate on the divided back place this card solidly in the White Border era, likely between 1909 and 1917. Haynes' postcards are among the most sought-after in the national parks collecting genre: his St. Paul studio held the exclusive Yellowstone concession for decades, and cards credited "Haynes Photo" carry consistent collector premiums. The composition here is masterful — dead bleached trees frame the mound left and right like sentinels, the saturated blue of the mineral water providing a cool counterpoint to the warm terracotta crust, dense evergreen forest pressing against a pale dawn sky. An evocative, scientifically accurate depiction of thermophilic mineral art.
