Postcard 1920s Lake Hotel Lobby Yellowstone Park Haynes Photo Interior

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA1920Pre-linenExcellent

Wicker chairs and potted palms fill the cavernous lobby of Yellowstone's Lake Hotel in this rare interior view by J. E. Haynes — a snapshot of Gilded Age resort life inside America's oldest national park, where wealthy tourists arrived by Northern Pacific Railway to take in geysers and grand piazzas in equal measure. Card number 23449 and the "Domestic 1c / Foreign 2c" stamp indicator date this to the White Border era, while the A-27109 catalog number suggests a slightly later pressing than PC-05198, possibly reaching into the early 1920s. The Lake Hotel, completed in 1891 and expanded in 1903 and again in 1922, is the oldest surviving building in any national park; its Colonial Revival facade disguises this sprawling, column-lined interior seen here appointed with wicker settees, writing tables, a gift counter along the far wall, and a staircase rising to the right. The color tinting gives the room a silvery-green cast that perfectly evokes the hushed, unhurried tempo of an Edwardian holiday. Interior hotel views from this era are considerably scarcer than exterior shots, making this card a particularly appealing addition to any Yellowstone or national parks collection.
