Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising imperiously above the streetcar tracks of early Vancouver, the grand Hotel Vancouver commands its corner lot in warm amber and golden tones in this early hand-colored card — automobiles of the 1910s dot the foreground, pedestrians stroll beneath ornate street lamps, and the hotel's Edwardian Baroque roofline bristles with ironwork against a moody sunset sky, projecting an air of commercial ambition that matched the city's own. The second Hotel Vancouver (there have been three) opened in 1916 at Georgia and Granville Streets, and this card — printed by Montreal's Novelty Manufacturing & Art Co. — captures it shortly after completion, before the city's skyline grew to dwarf it. The undivided-to-divided back transition format, with its single "ADDRESS" column and no message line allocation, suggests an early printing from the card's first years of availability. The card shows age toning consistent with its century of existence.
