Postcard 1940s Harrietta Plantation Dining Room McClellanville SC B&W

McClellanville, South Carolina, USA1940Pre-linenGood

Bathed in the cool gray tones of a masterful documentary photograph, the formal dining room of Harrietta Plantation near McClellanville, South Carolina reveals the quiet grandeur of a house built from age-proof black cypress in 1797 — a survivor of centuries along the Santee River delta. The oval mahogany table, shield-back Hepplewhite chairs, ornate Adam-style fireplace surround, and sparkling crystal chandelier speak to a period of extraordinary Federal-era craftsmanship. The photograph was made by the celebrated documentary photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, whose surveys of Southern architecture for the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South in the 1930s–40s produced some of the most important architectural records of the American South ever made. This card was produced by the Natural-Finish Card Advertising Service Agency of Charleston, S.C., and distributed to promote seasonal tours of the estate (open November to May).
