Antique & Vintage Postcards

Stately and gothic in its castellated silhouette, Otsego Hall rises behind a formal lawn bisected by a symmetrical stone path in this beautifully hand-colored view — a shrine to American literary history, the boyhood and eventual permanent home of James Fenimore Cooper, author of the beloved Leatherstocking Tales. Built in 1798 and tragically consumed by fire in 1852, the hall was long gone by the time this postcard was printed, making the image itself an act of preservation: a romanticized reconstruction of a lost landmark that tourists were invited to imagine standing before them. The crisp, unused condition of this Chas. W. Hughes "Star Quality" card speaks to its life as a souvenir never sent.
