Postcard Linen Old Oak Tree Magnolia Gardens Charleston SC 1930s Curteich

Charleston, South Carolina, USA1938LinenExcellent

A cathedral of living wood — the massive, moss-draped trunk of an ancient live oak spreads its roots into the soft earth of Magnolia Gardens outside Charleston, South Carolina, while cascades of silver Spanish moss filter the light and explosions of azalea blooms in coral, crimson, and white frame the scene like a painted dream. Magnolia Gardens, established on a plantation property by the Drayton family in the 1870s and opened to the public shortly after, became one of the most celebrated garden destinations in America — praised by luminaries including John Muir as among the most beautiful gardens in the world. The back of this Curteich linen card describes the gardens as "oriental and sub-tropic" and notes that "the awe-inspiring sight of the azalea blooms brings thousands of visitors each Spring." Distributed by F. J. Martschink Co. of Charleston, this card is a fine artifact of 1930s Southern tourism when a pilgrimage to the Low Country gardens was a rite of spring for East Coast travelers.
