Postcard 1942 Trieste Italy Harbor Sailboats RPPC Alterocca Terni

Trieste, Italy1942Pre-linenExcellent

Masts pierce a calm Adriatic sky in this evocative wartime snapshot of Trieste's yacht basin — sailboats numbered 1471 glide past a working waterfront whose elegant Habsburg-era facades still anchor the far quay, while a wooden dock in the foreground cradles two furled dinghies, a scene of surprising leisure frozen in the tense summer of 1942. Trieste in that year was an Italian city straining under the pressures of World War II, yet its sailing culture persisted; the port's Società Velica club had been active since the late 19th century, and small-boat racing continued even as the broader Adriatic was a war zone. The deckle (dentellated) border is characteristic of Alterocca-Terni's wartime production runs, and the reverse carries the Fascist-era authorization stamp "Aut. Min. Cultura Popolare 22-8-942" — meaning this card was formally approved by Mussolini's Ministry of Popular Culture before it could be printed or sold, making it a small artifact of state censorship as much as a tourist souvenir.
