Postcard 1920s Japan Chrysanthemum Exhibition Garden Real Photo RPPC

Japan (specific city unknown)1925RPPCGood

Hundreds of perfectly cultivated chrysanthemums — Japan's imperial flower and the emblem of autumn — bloom in tiered masses beneath a rustic bamboo-and-thatch shelter in this atmospheric real-photo card, likely capturing one of the famous kiku exhibitions held each November at a public garden or temple ground in the Tokyo or Osaka region, where florists and amateur growers competed fiercely for the finest blooms. Behind the display pavilion rises a two-story Western-influenced building with shuttered windows typical of the Meiji/Taisho transitional architecture found in Japanese parks of the early 20th century, while bare-branched trees frame the scene in the cool light of late autumn. Chrysanthemum festivals (Kikumatsuri) drew enormous crowds in interwar Japan, and photographic postcards like this one were sold at the gate as souvenirs, sometimes captioned in Japanese on the reverse. The back of this card bears a vertical Japanese inscription as well as the multilingual "Carte Postale / Postkarte / ОТКРЫТОЕ ПИСЬМО" heading and the telling legend Made in Japan, anchoring it firmly in the export-oriented postcard trade of the 1910s–1930s.
