Taranaki (Mt. Egmont), New Zealand1910Pre-linenGood

The volcanic cone of Mt. Egmont — called Taranaki by the Māori who regard it as a sacred ancestor — erupts from a tangle of subalpine scrub and dark lava fields at 8,260 feet, its summit hidden in a swirl of cloud and snow in this striking early official New Zealand Tourist Department photograph. Shot looking up the mountain's rugged southeastern flanks, the image conveys the raw geological drama of one of the world's most symmetrical stratovolcanoes, a peak that had already captivated European settlers since its first recorded ascent in 1839. The "F.T. Series" designation identifies this as part of the New Zealand government's own photographic postcard programme, a relatively short-lived and now-collectible initiative that promoted scenic tourism across the Dominion. The undivided address side — with the note that the message space "may be used for communication in N.Z. or the British Empire" — firmly places this in the 1907–1915 era. The card is unused but bears a pencilled dealer notation "150" in the top corner; the "M" salutation line carries a faint ink initial.
