Antique & Vintage Postcards

A sunlit Swedish river rushes through a corridor of dark spruce and birch in this warmly tinted Edwardian scene — "Motiv från Dalelfven," a view of the iconic Dalälven River in central Sweden, published by Stockholm's prolific Axel Eliassons Konstförlag as part of their beloved Från Sveriges Bygder ("From Sweden's Countryside") series. The card made a remarkable Atlantic crossing: postmarked in Iowa on August 7, 1907, it was addressed in confident copperplate script to Miss Mary at 160 W. Huron St., Buffalo, New York — likely a Swedish-American immigrant keeping ties with the homeland, or a traveller sharing a romantic landscape with someone back East. A 1-cent Benjamin Franklin stamp (blue-green) anchors the upper right, with the Iowa postmark clearly legible. The card's multilingual back — printed in Swedish, German, French, Polish, Russian, Hungarian, Italian, and English — reflects the universal postal ambitions of the Universal Postal Union era. Some toning and handling wear consistent with 117 years of postal life.
