Antique & Vintage Postcards

Lanterns sway from the eaves of a soaring three-story pagoda reflected in a lily-dotted pond while sculpted cranes stand frozen mid-preening along the rocky shore — this remarkable real-photo postcard documents the legendary Bernheimer Gardens of Hollywood Hills, one of early California's most extravagant private Japonisme fantasies, built by wealthy importer Charles around 1913 on a hillside estate later known as "Yamashiro." The pagoda seen here — an authentic structure reportedly disassembled and shipped from Japan — drew thousands of curious Angelenos and tourists who wound up the narrow canyon road to marvel at what the press called "the most beautiful private garden in America." The handwritten caption on the image face reads Japanese Pagoda — Bernheimer Gardens in elegant cursive, and the AZO square-stamp-box back with "A Z O" at four corners dates this RPPC to approximately 1918–1930, a golden window for the property before Charles's death in 1932 led to its transformation. A genuinely scarce document of a vanished Southern California landmark.
