Postcard 1920s Bernheimer House Hollywood California RPPC AZO Japanese Temple

Hollywood, California, USA1922RPPCExcellent

Perched like a dream above the hills of Hollywood, the extraordinary Bernheimer estate commands its hilltop in this rare real-photo postcard — the great Japanese palace hall rising over terraced gardens, a pagoda-roofed gatehouse, and the rooftops of early Hollywood below, the San Gabriel Mountains fading into the distance behind. Charles Bernheimer, a wealthy New York merchant captivated by Japanese art and architecture, built this extraordinary East Asian fantasy compound atop what is now Yamashiro restaurant's site on Highland Avenue, filling it with antiques, a full Japanese garden, and a replica of a Kyoto palace — all completed around 1914. By the early 1920s it had become one of Hollywood's most talked-about attractions, photographed endlessly by visitors and souvenir sellers alike. This AZO-back RPPC — printed on Kodak AZO paper with the characteristic square-corner stamp box and triangles — dates to approximately 1918–1930 based on AZO paper markings. The image is sharp and tonally rich; the inscription "Bernheimer House, Hollywood Cal." is handwritten in the lower left of the image. Unused; both sides clean.
