Antique & Vintage Postcards

Black swans glide across a dark reflecting pool fed by a stone waterfall cascade, while a graceful Japanese lattice pavilion rises behind them draped in lush greenery — this is the legendary private garden of the Bernheimer estate on Outpost Drive in Hollywood, California, one of the most extraordinary Japanese-style pleasure gardens ever created in the United States, where art dealer Adolph assembled over two decades one of the finest collections of Japanese art and architecture outside Japan itself. The garden featured authentic hand-carved stone lanterns, bronze temple bells, koi ponds, and this dramatic swan pool, all arranged to evoke a classical Japanese stroll garden on the Hollywood Hills, attracting celebrity visitors and Hollywood film crews throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The AZO stamp box on the reverse — with the "A Z O" pattern in all four quadrants — dates this real-photo postcard to approximately 1924–1940, consistent with the estate's peak period before it was sold after Adolph's death in 1936. The garden was eventually acquired and became the famous Yamashiro restaurant property, though much of the original planting was altered.
