Antique & Vintage Postcards

From high above the Adirondack Mountains, a bird's-eye view reveals the grand Stevens House resort sprawling across a manicured green promontory above the shimmering blue of Lake Placid — outbuildings, a circular carriage drive, tennis courts, and dock facilities all neatly laid out like a Gilded Age dream of the perfect mountain escape. Photographed from the air by Major Hamilton Maxwell, whose copyright notice appears at lower right in the image, this colorized aerial is a rare document of early aviation photography applied to tourism promotion. The Santway Photo-Craft Company of Watertown, New York, published this card, and the reverse instructs senders that postage is one cent domestic, two cents foreign — placing this firmly in the early to mid-1920s. The Stevens House was one of the most celebrated resort hotels in the Adirondacks, and Lake Placid would go on to host the 1932 Winter Olympics, making regional history cards of this era particularly sought after.
