Postcard 1908 Rollins Pass Atlantic Slope Moffat Road Colorado Steam Loco

Rollins Pass, Colorado, USA1907Pre-linenFair-Good

A massive steam locomotive bears down at close range from the upper right, its headlamp and smokestack dominating the frame while a lone figure — tiny against the vast talus field — stands on the barren Atlantic slope below, giving breathtaking scale to the altitude and desolation of Rollins Pass. The warm salmon and peach tones of a high-altitude sunset or sunrise wash the sky above the Colorado Rockies, lending this hand-colored card an almost cinematic quality rare among early railroad postcards. Card number 7161 identifies this as one of the earliest-issued views in the Moffat Road series, captured when the line was still a novelty and adventurous passengers rode to the very roof of North America. The solitary human figure and the locomotive's frontal approach make this one of the most viscerally dramatic compositions in the entire Moffat Road postcard canon — a genuinely striking image more than a century after it was made.
