Antique & Vintage Postcards

Perched on a grassy bluff above winding carriage paths, the Grand Canyon Hotel at Yellowstone spreads its sweeping Mission-Revival roofline against a warm rose-and-blue sky in this hand-tinted Haynes view — a building that travelers of the early automobile age would have recognized as the grandest structure in the American West's most dramatic canyon country. Built by the Northern Pacific Railway's Yellowstone Park Association and opened in 1911, the hotel sat just steps from the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and offered guests views of the Lower Falls. J. E. Haynes, Yellowstone's official photographer, published this White-Border card from his St. Paul studio under card number 14056; the R-64138 printer code on the reverse places production solidly in the 1916–1930 window. Sadly, the original Grand Canyon Hotel was demolished in 1960 — making surviving photographic records like this postcard among the few tangible reminders of its brief but glamorous existence.
