Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bustling with market carts, parasol-shaded stalls, and the faint suggestion of early motor traffic, this warm sepia-tinted view of St. Pölten's Herrenplatz — the historic main square — and its Wienerstraße perspective offers a rare animated glimpse of Lower Austrian commercial life circa 1910–12. The ornate plague column dominates the square's centre, with the round-towered Rathaus rising behind, while shop fronts including "Vinz. Hofinger" and a building lettered "MARKTHOF" line the left side. The card was posted on 25 October 1912 with an Austrian 5-Heller Franz Joseph stamp, addressed to Dr. Franz Wimmer, Bezirkshauptmann (district commissioner), originally care of Wien IV / Wiedner Gürtel / Parkhotel — then redirected in red ink "retour St. Pölten." A lengthy German message fills the left column. The notation "nicht angekommen!" (did not arrive!) appears prominently in red at the top of the address side, making this a doubly interesting postal-history piece.
