Postcard 1909 Vienna Aspern Battle Archduke Karl Exhibition Austria Art Card

Vienna, Austria1909Pre-linenExcellent

A cannon-smoke battlefield frozen in oil paint — this 1909 souvenir postcard reproduces Peter Krafft's monumental canvas of Archduke Karl rallying Austrian forces at the Battle of Aspern on 22 May 1809, the first major Napoleonic defeat in open battle, and was posted on the centenary of that very victory from the special Erzherzog Karl-Ausstellung (Archduke Charles Exhibition) held in Vienna. The blue hexagonal commemorative cancel — "ASPERN 22. MAI 1909 / ERZH. CARL AUSSTELLUNG / WIEN I/1 22. MAI 1909" — is a prized philatelic artifact of the anniversary celebrations. The card was sent to Frau Anna in Vienna's XVII district by an enthusiastic attendee who describes seeing the painting and the exhibition in flowing Kurrent script, franked with a 5-Heller Franz Joseph I green stamp. Published by L. Bruck / Bruder Jaffé, Wien, a respected Viennese postcard house.
