Antique & Vintage Postcards

A soft-edged oil-style panorama sweeps across this "Wiener Kunst" art postcard, capturing the medieval pilgrimage town of Mariazell nestled in the Styrian Alps — the twin Baroque towers of the Basilica of the Nativity of Mary rising above white-walled townhouses, with the rounded mass of the Gemeindealpe and the distant Ötscher peak hovering in violet haze behind. Painted ("pinx.") by K. Ludwig Prinz, this is a high-quality chromolithographic art reproduction card from the celebrated Viennese fine-art postcard house B.K.W.I., card no. 226-16. The card traveled from Mariazell — postmarked there in 1922 — addressed to a Fräulein (young woman, first name initial "L.") in Vienna's 16th district, Pingstbergweg. The 500-Kronen Austrian inflation-era stamp (yellow, Scott #261 or similar) is a collector's bonus: Austria in 1922 was in the grip of hyperinflation, and high-denomination stamps of this type are genuinely scarce on cover. A handwritten message in old German Kurrent script fills the correspondence panel — a small, intimate window into post-WWI Austrian daily life.
