Antique & Vintage Postcards

A dome of blazing orange and rust-streaked travertine rises like a desert mesa from the thermal basin in this hand-colored pre-linen postcard of "Orange Geyser" — more accurately the Orange Mound Spring at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park — its mineral-stained flanks glowing amber and ochre against a pale sky while skeletal dead trees stand as mute witnesses to the spring's slow geological conquest of the landscape. Card no. 1342 in a numbered series, this was published by the Benham-Baldwin Co. of Los Angeles and San Francisco (the "Made in America by Benham" side-stamp is faintly visible), with hand-applied color typical of the "private mailing card" and early divided-back era. The reverse is entirely unused — domestic postage listed as one cent, foreign two cents — dating it firmly to the 1907–1915 window. A small paper label reading "Orange Geyser" is affixed to the front of the card, a period dealer or exhibit tag that adds charming provenance.
