Antique & Vintage Postcards

Steam curls gently above the electric-blue void of Morning Glory Pool — one of Yellowstone's most photographed and beloved hot springs — its deep funnel dropping to unknown depth while orange and cream mineral deposits rim the shore like a flower's petals in this gorgeous linen-era postcard copyright by Haynes Inc. and printed by Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago, masters of the linen postcard art. Card no. 16049, series 4K-H281, this is a fine example of the Curt Teich "Art Colortone" process at its best: the vivid cerulean of the pool, the salmon of the mineral rim, the dark-green pines, and the distant lodge-style building combine with almost surreal beauty. The reverse carries a full descriptive text block — noting the pool is "23 feet across and about 29 feet deep" with water temperature "over 200 degrees" — and calls for a one-cent stamp, suggesting a 1930s date before the rate increase.
