Antique & Vintage Postcards

Under a theatrical midnight-blue sky alive with painted clouds, Piazza Santa Maria Novella glows with gaslit warmth in this richly chromolithographed artist-rendered card — figures in Edwardian dress promenade before the green-and-white marble façade of Florence's great Dominican church while an Egyptian obelisk stands sentinel at right. Sent by a traveler named Anne to a friend, the card's crowded back describes a whirlwind Italian itinerary: staying in the hotel visible in the card's left corner, worshipping at Santa Maria Novella, planning to leave for Rome on Wednesday, then five days in Naples, a day trip to Pisa, and finally the excited prospect of seeing someone named Mayotte — "it will be marvellous to see her. Loads of love from all three." The card was produced by an Italian chromolithographic publisher (marked "Produzione Italiana / Imprimé en Italie / Printed in Italy," series 4291-11) and presents the piazza in a romanticized nocturne style popular ca. 1905–1915.
