Antique & Vintage Postcards

Long before tourism brochures were printed in color, a chicory coffee company in Lille, France was dispatching the Grand Canal of Venice into the world's mailboxes — this advertising card for Chicorée Extra "À la Belle Jardinière" by C. Bériot of Lille reproduces what appears to be a painterly engraving or tonal photograph of the Canal Grande, with the dome of Santa Maria della Salute presiding serenely in the distance and a lone gondola cutting through glassy water. Bériot's chicory cards were a classic early French promotional series: printed in the undivided-back "Carte Postale" format with French correspondence conventions, they were distributed as collectible premiums to customers — a 19th-century loyalty program in postcard form. The back shows heavy moisture damage with a large tide-mark stain obscuring much of the correspondence area, while the front image retains its moody, atmospheric quality. Two copies of this same card are present in this batch (PC-05293 and PC-05294), one with a face-up stain remnant and one slightly cleaner — both unused.
