Antique & Vintage Postcards

A premium postcard issued by the chicory coffee firm C. Bériot of Lille whisks us to the shimmering Grand Canal of Venice — this second copy of the Bériot "Belle Jardinière" Venice view shows the same atmospheric Venetian scene as its companion (PC-05293), with Santa Maria della Salute's dome anchoring the far distance and gondolas and working boats animating the foreground waters. Bériot distributed these evocative world-view cards as collectible premiums to loyal customers of their chicory coffee substitute — a marketing strategy that made geography and travel aspirational for French households who might never leave the Nord department. This copy is slightly better preserved than its companion, with the back stain somewhat less severe, though still present as a ghost watermark across the correspondence area. The image itself — apparently after a veduta painting or fine engraving in the tradition of Canaletto and Guardi — retains lovely tonal depth, the palazzo facades along the canal catching reflected light in a way no photograph of the era could quite match.
