Antique & Vintage Postcards

Milan's impossibly ornate Duomo erupts from the page like a stone forest — hundreds of Gothic pinnacles, statues, and tracery panels crowding the skyline above a busy piazza where horse-drawn trams still share the cobbles with early motorcars, a perfect snapshot of a city in transition. This early black-and-white photomechanical card, printed in Italy ("Stampata in Italia") and numbered 3150/14, captures the Duomo's western façade in full glory alongside the equestrian monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, which anchors the right foreground. The scene dates almost certainly to the first decade of the 1900s, when Milan was Italy's most rapidly modernizing city and its cathedral square the symbolic heart of the new kingdom. The reverse is undivided or early divided-back and completely blank — never addressed, never sent.
