Antique & Vintage Postcards

At the crest of the Ligurian Apennines where the road between Genoa and the Po Valley crests the Passo dei Giovi, a gleaming three-story hotel catches the thin mountain light — and in the street below, the early twentieth century plays out in miniature: a horse-drawn carriage stands at the curb while a square-topped early automobile, probably a Fiat or similar Italian machine of around 1910–1920, rolls past in the opposite direction, the two eras of transport sharing a dirt road with a casualness that won't last long. The Albergo Svizzera Ligure ("Swiss-Ligurian Hotel") was a well-known stopping point for travelers and cyclists crossing the col, and the figures gathered at its entrance — men in dark suits and hats — suggest a prosperous establishment. Published by Ed. G. N. Artigione of Busalla (the nearest rail town), this unused card is a rare local-publisher view of a mountain pass hotel, far more elusive than city monument cards and rich with social and transport history.
