Postcard Florence Italy Allori Christ & Adulteress Chiesa S. Spirito RPPC

Florence, Italy1900Pre-linenFair-Good

In the hushed interior of Florence's Chiesa di Santo Spirito, Alessandro Allori's dramatic altarpiece "Cristo e la donna adultera" fills this rare real-photo-style albumen or silver gelatin postcard with Mannerist grandeur — Christ extends a commanding hand toward a penitent woman bowing on the steps while apostles press close and an angel sweeps overhead in a luminous upper register. Allori (1535–1607), a Florentine Mannerist and student of Bronzino, painted this work with characteristically cool, silvery tonality and monumental figure scale; the card's black-and-white photographic reproduction captures the painting's theatrical chiaroscuro with remarkable fidelity, including the predella panels visible along the bottom edge. The reverse is blank except for a light penciled "50" and the printed card number 1252, consistent with a late-19th- to early-20th-century Italian photographic postcard series sold directly through Florentine churches or tourist vendors — a format predating standardized publisher credits. Condition is Fair-Good, with the characteristic foxing and emulsion wear of a century-old photographic print on card stock.
