Postcard 1934 Rome Italy Palazzo del Quirinale Royal Residence Photogravure

Rome, Italy1934Pre-linenGood

A silver-toned photogravure from 1934 captures the sweeping grandeur of Rome's Palazzo del Quirinale at the height of Italy's monarchy, the towering Egyptian obelisk flanked by the colossal Dioscuri horse-tamers presiding over the broad piazza while fashionably dressed Romans stroll beneath the palace's rusticated cornice — a building that had served popes, kings, and would soon house presidents. The Quirinale, begun in 1583 under Pope Gregory XIII and completed across two centuries, became the official royal residence ("Residenza Reale") of the House of Savoy after Italian unification in 1871; the back inscription captures it in that monarchical moment, just fifteen years before it would transition to the Italian Republic in 1946. The photogravure technique — note the fine tonal grain and sepia-cream ink — places this squarely in the "Fotogravuren, Cstore Capella, Milano" production house's prestige travel series issued in 1934, a year when Mussolini's Italy was aggressively marketing its imperial heritage to domestic and foreign tourists alike.
