Postcard Cheapside Looking East London England c1900 Pre-Linen Undivided Back

London, England, UK1901Pre-linenGood

Horse-drawn wagons, cabs, and bustling pedestrians jam the canyon of Victorian commercial buildings along Cheapside looking east toward the dome of St. Paul's in this strikingly atmospheric early photographic postcard of London — the image rendered in a soft vignette style characteristic of the finest Edwardian-era printing, the street alive with trade and movement that has defined this City of London thoroughfare since medieval times. Cheapside — whose name derives from the Old English "ceap" (market or trade) — was London's primary retail street for centuries and by 1900 remained one of the busiest commercial arteries in the world. This undivided-back card, with its instruction "THE ADDRESS ONLY TO BE WRITTEN ON THIS SIDE," dates it firmly to before 1902 in the UK (when divided backs were authorized), making it among the earliest mass-produced tourist postcards. The stamp box indicates "½d. Stamp for Inland," consistent with the British inland postcard rate of the era. The card was never used or addressed, preserving it in exceptional condition for its age — well over 120 years old.
