Antique & Vintage Postcards

Painted in moody dusk tones of burnt amber and deep olive, this evocative early art postcard of Westminster Abbey captures the great Gothic pile rising above St. James's Park as though glimpsed through a painter's reverie — white gulls daubed in swift strokes against the glowing sky, a wrought-iron fence threading the foreground shadows. The image is signed "Pirkis" in the lower left, identifying it as the work of the Schlosser & Co. art series produced in Vienna/Austria for the British market, one of the most collectible early pictorial postcard series of the Edwardian era. Postmarked London, March 8, 1903 and received in Philadelphia on March 30, 1903 — a transatlantic crossing of just 22 days — the card was addressed to a Miss Sophie at 3418 Hamilton Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The sender, signing only as "Jan" (or possibly "Jean"), writes warmly of their wandering travels: "You from your ever wondering & wandering Jan." A "T" (postage-due) handstamp appears on the reverse, suggesting the one-penny British stamp was deemed insufficient for overseas postage at point of receipt.
