Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bold Art Deco geometry meets the pastoral River Avon in this vivid chromolithograph of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon, the striking brick building that replaced the original Victorian theatre destroyed by fire in 1926 and opened to great controversy in 1932 — the very year this card was almost certainly produced and sold. The theatre's cylindrical tower and cantilevered riverside terrace are reflected perfectly in the glassy water below, with willow and poplar framing the scene in lush summer green, a composition that became one of the most-reproduced postcard images of interwar Britain. Published by J. Salmon Ltd. of Sevenoaks, one of England's most respected postcard houses, on their long-running Salmon Series with the catalogue number 3781. The reverse is unused and pristine, making this a clean example of a card that dates to the theatre's opening decade.
