Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sweeping across the quiet meanders of the River Avon from a vertiginous vantage atop the original Shakespeare Memorial Tower, this breathtaking panoramic color card captures Stratford-on-Avon in its Edwardian prime — Holy Trinity Church spire piercing the horizon, the town's red-tile rooftops spilling toward the river bend, and lush green water-meadows stretching to the Welcombe Hills beyond. The color process, Peacock "Autochrom," was the Pictorial Stationery Company's proprietary photochrom-style reproduction technique, yielding the luminous, slightly dreamy palette that distinguishes these cards from their contemporaries. This is one of the earliest mass-market bird's-eye views of Stratford available to tourists; the original Shakespeare Memorial building visible in earlier period cards burned in 1926, making pre-fire Stratford panoramas historically significant. The reverse is entirely blank and pristine — printed in Saxony, as was common for the finest British postcard production of the era, with postage rates printed for both inland (½d) and abroad (1d).
