Antique & Vintage Postcards

Long trestle benches stretch beneath soaring medieval timber beams in this evocative sepia study of the King Edward VI Grammar School classroom in Stratford-upon-Avon — the very room where a young William Shakespeare would have parsed Latin conjugations by candlelight some four centuries before this postcard was printed. Francis Frith & Co. captured the schoolroom's spare, scholarly beauty: an arched wooden screen divides the teaching space from a small library beyond, a master's lectern stands sentinel at centre, and empty benches invite the imagination to populate them with Elizabethan schoolboys. Frith's Series cards of this era, with their characteristic Art Nouveau lettering and half-penny stamp instruction, date this example to the Edwardian golden age of postcard collecting, roughly 1902–1910.
