Antique & Vintage Postcards

Framed by blazing autumn maples and luminous blue-green water, the octagonal stone Power House at Ausable Chasm in upstate New York stands sentinel between Horseshoe Falls cascading through a stone arch bridge at left and a smaller cascade foaming at right — a linen-era jewel of the Adirondack tourist corridor that captures the era's romantic vision of industry harmoniously embedded in wilderness. Ausable Chasm, carved by the AuSable River through Cambrian sandstone over millennia, became one of New York's premier tourist attractions in the late 19th century, and the Power House harnessed the falls for electricity while becoming a scenic landmark in its own right; the reverse text tantalizes with a roster of natural wonders — "Elephant's Head, Devils Oven, Jacobs Ladder, Devils Punch Bowl, Mystic Gorge, Hydea Cave, Cape Eternity, Smugglers Pass." Unused and clean, published by Tichnor Brothers of Boston, whose "Quality Views" linen cards are among the most collectible of the genre.
