Antique & Vintage Postcards

Every surface of Flynn's Candle Shop in Escondido Village blazes with color — hanging bead curtains, rows of tapered pillars, blown-glass seahorses in amber and ruby, a round table draped in gold lamé laden with sculptural wax confections — a sensory tableau that perfectly encapsulates the exuberant retail aesthetics of mid-1960s California gift culture, preserved here in a chrome postcard mailed from San Diego in July 1965. The card was sent by a traveler — signed with a name that begins with what appears to be a looping cursive, addressing it to a Mrs. Calvin Kendall at 1236 Brockley, Lakewood — and the handwritten message on the left half references candles, San Diego, and what reads as enthusiastic sightseeing commentary, a warm personal document of American vacation culture at its most optimistic. Published by Amescolor Publishers and printed by McGrew Printing, Escondido, it carries a 4¢ Lincoln stamp (Scott #1036 or similar definitive) cancelled at San Diego, California, July 1965 — a fully postally used example in Fine condition.
