Antique & Vintage Postcards

Coit Tower crowns Telegraph Hill in a blaze of sunset orange and gold in this luminous linen-era card, the fluted concrete column soaring above Art Deco terraces and a ring of scarlet flowers — one of San Francisco's most iconic silhouettes rendered at its most theatrical. Built in 1933 with funds bequeathed by the eccentric and beloved Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the tower was already a must-see attraction by the time Fred dropped this card in a San Francisco mailbox on February 2, 1938, addressing it simply "Greetings, Fred" to Mary at her home on Argonne Street in Washington, D.C. The 1¢ green Franklin stamp (Scott #597 type) is properly affixed and machine-cancelled with a bold San Francisco slogan postmark urging recipients to "Ask Your Postmaster" about U.S. Savings Bonds — a patriotic fiscal appeal typical of the late Depression era. Publisher Stanley A. Piltz Co. of San Francisco produced some of the finest linen cards of the period, and this example retains vivid color throughout.
