Postcard Linen Cave of the Winds Temple of Silence Manitou CO 1929+

Manitou Springs, Colorado, USA1929LinenGood

Stalactites drip like cathedral organ pipes and stalagmites rise from the cave floor in this hauntingly beautiful linen-era view of the "Mysterious Temple of Silence" — a chamber inside Manitou Springs' Cave of the Winds discovered in February 1929 and immediately hailed as the most spectacular room in the entire cave system. The colorized photograph captures the multi-hued theatrical lighting — greens, golds, and deep reds — that made this chamber a sensation among visitors to the Pikes Peak region. The back text specifies the discovery date precisely, making this card a near-contemporary document of the room's opening to the public. Cave of the Winds, carved through Permian-era limestone just west of Colorado Springs, had been a commercial tourist attraction since 1881. This unused example is clean and bright.
