Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sent from Colorado Springs in September 1938, this vivid linen card of a D&RGW steam locomotive thundering through the Royal Gorge carries a charming, breezy message from a traveler named Homer to his friend Lucile in Washington, D.C. — "Hi Lucile! I hate to tell you this but yesterday I threw snowballs on Pikes Peak. Tell Pa and the Babe hello for me." — a perfectly capsulized snapshot of a carefree Depression-era vacation, complete with alpine snow in September and warm affection for the folks back home. The front view, numbered 571 and published by the Lincoln Souvenir Co. of Denver, shows the D&RGW train stopped at the Hanging Bridge with the canyon walls soaring on either side and steam billowing skyward. A one-cent Washington stamp (Scott #498 or similar) franks the card, postmarked Colorado Springs, SEP [date] 1938, 5:30 PM.
