Postcard Hopi House Grand Canyon National Park Arizona Linen Fred Harvey

Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA1940LinenExcellent

Ladders lean against sun-warmed stone terraces at the Hopi House, the iconic pueblo-style structure perched at the Grand Canyon's South Rim — a place where native craft, tourism, and Fred Harvey's legendary hospitality converged in one of America's most photographed buildings. Designed by Mary Colter and opened in 1905, the Hopi House was modeled closely after the ancient dwellings of Old Oraibi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America; Hopi artisans actually lived and worked here in the early years, weaving, pottery-making, and performing dances for arriving Santa Fe Railway passengers. The linen-era card captures the stepped masonry exterior with characteristic warm tones, tall wooden ladders scaling the roofline, and a bright Arizona sky above — a vivid postcard of Colter's masterwork at the height of the Harvey Company's influence over Southwestern tourism.
