Antique & Vintage Postcards

Three small figures — children, it seems — perch on a log at the wooded water's edge of Fountain Mill Race near Hawkinsville, Georgia, the languid millstream reflecting a canopy of birch and pine in tones of amber, sage, and silver-grey that give this early hand-colored card an almost dreamlike, timeless quality. Mill races — the channels that carried water to power grist and sawmills — were once the industrial lifeblood of small Southern towns, and Hawkinsville, seat of Pulaski County on the Ocmulgee River, was no exception; by the time this card was published by Saunders Drug Co., the mill itself was likely more picturesque ruin than working machinery, already beloved as a local beauty spot. On the back, a traveler named simply "Gladys" sent a brief, cheerful note to her friend Mrs. Tynn in Port Huron, Michigan: "Had a grand trip. Hope to leave for home tomorrow." The postmark from Hawkinsville, Georgia is dated June 11 (year partially legible, ca. 1940–1947).
